Meta Investigates a Novel Social Network That Has the Potential to Rival Twitter

Meta is considering creating a new decentralized social network that focuses on text-based updates and has the potential to compete with Elon Musk’s Twitter. The project, which is currently known as P92, would be a standalone app, but users could log in using their Instagram credentials. This move could help Meta attract users who are seeking alternatives to Twitter after Musk’s takeover and changes to the site’s rules.

The project is being led by Instagram head Adam Mosseri, and Meta is also exploring integrations with existing social networks like Twitter or Mastodon using a protocol called ActivityPub. Decentralized social networks like Mastodon or Bluesky avoid centralized control of content and censorship by using individual servers with a uniform protocol.

It’s not clear how far along Meta is in the development process, and the company has described the idea as a “work-in-progress.” The goal of this project is to create a separate space where creators and public figures can share timely updates about their interests and expand Meta’s offerings beyond Facebook, WhatsApp, and Instagram.
